7 Ways To Conquer The Winter Blues

When the temperatures drop, so does our mood.  It’s easy to sulk when it’s cold and nasty outside. Here are 7 ways to win the battle against the winter blues.

1. Clean your space

With the frigid temperatures outside, you are spending much more of your day inside.  Life gets messy…  Clean it up!  If the last time you wiped your baseboards was in the Spring (of 2011) hop to it!  If you are just “too down to clean it yourself,” consider hiring a professional cleaning service.  In the Winnipeg area?  Give Signature Cleaning Services a call! 2. Stay active and eat healthy

This one seems like a no-brainer, but it really does make a difference.  If your diet consists of junk, it’s no wonder you feel like it.  Despite popular belief, pork rinds and Mountain Dew are not breakfast staples.  Plan healthy meals and keep yourself moving.  Just because it is too cold to go jogging doesn’t mean you have to be stagnant!  (There are plenty of exercises you can do in your own home!)

3. Let the Sunshine in

Sunlight boosts serotonin, which in turn boosts our mood.  By exposing ourselves to as much sunlight as possible, we will force ourselves into a positive state of mind.  It may not seem like much during these dreary months, but any little bit helps.  Get out there and soak up some Vitamin D!

4. Pick up a handy hobby

Hobbies are great because they keep your mind occupied.  You can’t be too depressed if you stay busy making crafts, tending a garden, or creating new recipes.  The possibilities are endless, and the effect that it will have on your frame of mind will astonish you.  Maybe you can make some of the awesome crafts you’ve been pinning on Pinterest.

5. Fill your social calendar

Being social doesn’t have to involve going out on the town.  Plan a dinner party and invite all of your close friends, schedule a game night, or just meet some friends at the dog park.  Getting out there and spending time with the important people in your life can really work wonders.

6. Treat yo’ self

Find a fun and flirty new hairstyle or buy a new winter coat.   I don’t mean put yourself into credit card debt or blow your grocery budget on shoes.  When was the last time you did something nice for yourself?  For those in a serious winter rut, start slow.  Let’s try and brush our hair today.

7. Set a goal (and stick to it)

Nothing boosts our spirits more than accomplishing a goal.  Think of something that you want and set your sights on that.  Use a calendar to track your progress.  Don’t just set a goal to have something accomplished by the end of winter, set weekly or monthly goals to keep yourself on track.
